Jump wins funding to help the NHS go net zero

We are excited to announce that Jump has been awarded a £690,000 contract from NHS England to develop a world first healthcare specific carbon engagement tool. It will help the NHS go net zero by empowering the 1.4. million NHS staff to adopt more environmentally friendly practices. The tool will allow users to calculate the carbon footprint their individual working role and their home life, allowing them to see the difference between the two. The funding has been awarded as part of the second phase of an SBRI Healthcare competition open to pioneering MedTech and digital innovations, in partnership with the Greener NHS Programme.

The Project

  • Jump’s healthcare specific innovation will be built over the course of 2023 and is designed to help the NHS reach its goal of going net zero by 2040.
  • The carbon engagement tool will be trialled by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and across the 5 NHS Trusts in the Dorset ICS grouping (Integrated Care System), before being available to other NHS Trusts and organisations through Jump’s bespoke sustainability engagement platforms.
  • The work was commissioned and will be funded by the SBRI Healthcare programme. SBRI Healthcare is an Accelerated Access Collaborative (AAC) initiative, championed by the Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs).

Jump as a sustainability solution for the NHS

Jump currently works with 24 NHS Trusts throughout England to help them reduce their scope 2 and 3 emissions through their employee engagement platforms that focus on sustainability and wellbeing. The new tool will further develop Jump’s current digital engagement platform, tailoring the users’ journey based on their specific working role within the NHS and motivating positive actions that can be taken to reduce carbon impact in a range of areas such as energy use, water use, and waste reduction. The user can also participate in activities aimed at lifestyle, such as diet and active travel. The NHS will be able to track employee engagement in the programme over time, as well as range of environmental data on dashboards within the platform.

What our partners say

The success of this bid wouldn’t have been possible without our NHS partners, see below what they have to say about the project:

Laura Middlemass, Assistant Sustainability Manager at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust says:

“At Newcastle Hospitals we realise that achieving our ambitious Net Zero aims will not be possible without inspiring, informing and empowering our people to deliver sustainable healthcare. That is why we are so excited to be working in partnership with Jump on the development of the new low carbon engagement tool to drive transformational change delivered by our people, whilst increasing our understanding of how we as an organisation can best support them to make the changes we know they are so very eager to make.”

Libby Sutherland, Head of Sustainability at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust says:

“This innovation will allow the NHS to track its scope 2 and 3 carbon emissions in a way that is not currently possible and will enable us to reach our goal of net zero by 2040 much faster. Working with Jump on the initial development phase of the project has been really exciting and I am confident that colleagues and teams across our five hospitals in Leeds will really get behind the new tool.”

Stuart Lane, Sustainability and Carbon Manager at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust says:

“Having an engagement platform of this kind has opened up new ways to deliver progress towards the Trusts’ and Dorset wide Green Plans. We are thrilled that, through this successful SBRI bid, we now get to support the next step in the evolution of Jump, to help define bespoke and targeted activities for our staff – specific to the role they play in healthcare.”
