Jump (Local Green Points) on London Live

Did you know? If every Londoner recycled one more plastic bottle each week for one year, the energy saved could power Wembley Stadium for two years!

This morning Our Managing Director, Graham Simmonds, appeared on London Live to talk about how we incentivise Londoners to recycle more and why London is lagging behind the rest of the UK.

London is the region of the UK with the lowest recycling rate – around 33% compared to the national average of over 43%. Considering that the UK is trying to reach an EU-wide target to recycle 50% of household waste by 2020, there’s a lot of work still to be done!

Having worked with a range of Local Authorities over recent years, we know that London faces unique issues – dense housing and a lack of facilities mean recycling is more difficult for residents. A lack of conformity in what can be recycled across different London Boroughs is confusing for residents, with some areas of the capital having particularly transient populations.

We work with five London Boroughs to encourage residents to reduce waste, reuse more and recycle what they can. Our Hammersmith and Fulham scheme covering 32 estates offers £950 in prizes for participants. Earlier this month, resident Rute Tomaz won £200 for being part of the scheme.

There are already plenty of good reasons to recycle – we just like to provide a few more!
