Walk this May

Throughout May, members of our Jump programmes took part in our latest campaign – Walk this May.

We challenged our members to take part in our month-long campaign to celebrate National Walking Month and Mental Health Awareness Week.

Walk this May and the world five times over

Our Jump community took part in four new Walk This May-themed activities, motivating members to spent time outdoors and offering tips on how to be mindful whilst doing so. We challenged them to see how far they could walk in May, alongside weekly actions to boost wellbeing through walking.

Collectively our Jump community took 300 million steps, walking over 249,000 kilometres. That’s enough to walk around the world five and a half times!

We had over 1,000 members complete all four activities as well as taking part in the Step Challenge. This qualified them to enter our raffle to win a Fitbit Inspire 2.

A huge congratulations to Barbara B, a member of Shine Rewards, one of our brilliant NHS Trust programmes.

Barbara says:

“One the biggest changes I’ve made with Shine is changing from buying bottles of water regularly to using re-useable water bottles at both work and home.

“This has massively reduced the amount of plastic I’ve been using, as I aim to achieve at least 1.5 litre of water per day.”

We know that these small actions add up to a big difference and are thrilled to have Barbara as our winner.

Why walking?

Walking is good for our minds, our bodies and our neighbourhoods. It has been a source of joy during the past year, helping people stay active and connected.

Enjoying the outdoors and exercising in fresh air are both excellent ways to boost our mental wellbeing. From forest bathing and the feeling of grass on bare feet, to bird watching and growing your own plants. There are so many ways we can connect with nature, whether in our back gardens or local parks.

Walk this May with our Jump community

We were blown away by photos and submissions we received throughout May from our Jump members. Here are  some of our favourite stories of how our Jump community has been connecting with nature and looking after their mental health – all by walking!

Josephine D – “I engaged my senses by: Hearing: walking and listening to the wind blowing through the trees. Smell: Cutting my back garden grass and smelling the scent of newly cut grass. Touch: feeling the grass beneath my bare feet. Sight: Looking at my vegetable patch in the back garden and seeing how much it has started to grow.”

Megan C – “It’s easy to think all you can hear in the city is cars – but if you really try like I did you can hear birdsong and perhaps spy some beautiful birds that aren’t pigeons or seagulls!”

Brandi L – “My son and I took a walk through local paths including a patch by the river we think of as our ‘pretend woods’, which we visited daily when we were not allowed to travel to the woods. This week we looked at the bluebells opening, the nettle and comfrey finally looking lush, and the last of the trees unfurling their leaves. I reflected on how much solace this space in our neighbourhood has given us and how nature roots us in time through its constant cycles.​”
