2020: Coronavirus, the Climate Emergency and creating real change

Coronavirus and the Climate Emergency : a global shift

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that 2020 has been a rollercoaster of a year.

Whilst we’ve all faced new challenges and uncertainties there have been some big moments for the sustainability agenda too.

Coronavirus and the Climate Emergency both present a real threat to us and our planet, and we’ve seen a drive in the commitment to creating real change.

From China’s 2060 Net Zero commitment to the NHS delivering Net Zero by 2050, we’ve seen global shifts like never before.

Sustainability and wellbeing amid the pandemic

Whilst our team has been working from home since March, at Jump we’ve engaged more people in sustainability and wellbeing than ever before.

Through our Active Travel activity, members have avoided 140,000 kg of CO2e and completed over 250,000 miles of active travel. That’s enough to walk around the world 10 times over!

The developments we’ve seen this year are a real testament to the sustainability and wellbeing professionals we work so closely with. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, we’ve seen a commitment to positive action across our programmes. Through coronavirus and the Climate Emergency we have continued to deliver lasting behaviour change and a record-breaking number of positive actions.

New ownership, new clients and new experiences

In May, Jump became an Employee Ownership Trust to reflect the flexibility, creativity and drive that we see on a day-to-day basis from our team.

We welcomed Great Ormond Street Hospital and Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust to our growing cohort of NHS Trusts taking part in Jump.

We saw University of Exeter launch their Jump programme for all students and staff for the new academic year, amid one of the most trying times our universities have experienced. University of Strathclyde also extended their Jump programme to include all 21,000 students.

We look forward to launching University of Nottingham’s programme in the new year and continuing to work closely with our clients to build on the successes we’ve seen throughout 2020.

Coronavirus, the Climate Emergency and team developments

Our team hasn’t been immune to changes in a year that’s certainly been full of them!

We’ve said a fond farewell to Freya Pratt, Business Development Coordinator, as she pursues a Masters in Sustainability and Consultancy at the University of Leeds.

We are delighted to welcome Beth Strong and Anna Ireland to the Jump team in 2020.

Beth joins us as Business Development Manager, with a strong background in sustainability and wellness related sales. Anna is taking on the role of Programme Assistant and her experience of communications whilst working for Keep Scotland Beautiful and the STV Children’s appeal made her the top choice in a tough field!

Wrapping up the year

As we move into the festive season, we’ve been adapting our programmes to nudge people towards being more sustainable in the lead up to Christmas.

Our flexible approach allows us to adapt our programmes throughout the year. Whether that’s for campaigns such as Waste Warriors and All Together April, or season-specific activities.

Every Christmas, the volume of waste produced in the UK increases by 30%. We’re asking members of Jump to think twice before they ‘Checkout’. Asking will the recipient use this gift again and again, or throw it away after one use? We reward users for their positive behaviours and signpost them towards useful resources, such as these zero waste gift ideas.

We’ve even created our own quiz to challenge perceptions of food waste at Christmas alongside this food carbon calculator to assess the environmental impact of your festive meals.

What does 2021 hold for you?

Are you looking to engage your people in sustainability and wellbeing? Whether your focus is on residents, students or employees, we are the behaviour change experts creating positive action for all.

Join us in recognising the power of collective action and creating lasting behaviour change. We wish you a safe and restful end to the year, with new beginnings for us all in 2021.
